5B: A Gateway to Culture

The project addresses the connection between the historical heritage of Paisley and the city centre of the town. It aims to bring attention to the town by showcasing its past development and promoting present cultural activities.

The 5B project explores Paisley’s past and seeks to develop an understanding of the transformations that the town went through. The research phase of the project also includes the development of a series of analytical drawings that showcase the footfall, noise levels, location of cultural and leisure buildings, connection to the nature and the river, and other factors that describe the current character and use of the town centre of Paisley. These drawings are prepared by the means of observation and research, and aim to bring about better understanding that will be useful for the further development of the project.

By analysing the above-mentioned data, the project aims to provide an architectural response that improves the urban space and creates more opportunities for Paisley’s people to connect to the heritage building site, nature and the river. The current proposal is to physically connect the area of the Abbey to the squares on the opposite site of the river and create a interpretation centre that educates the population of Paisley about the history of the town and the preservation of its built remains in an interactive way.  The centre would also provide classes and workshops, and a café shop. The physical form of the proposed building is designed to frame the views towards the Abbey from the opposite shore of the river and add a new perspective to the historic buildings in the area from its roof terrace. The development of a footpath along the Abbey side of the river promotes the connection to the water that is currently lacking in the town centre.

The series of  proposed architectural interventions interventions aim to educate, inspire cultural activity and improve the interconnection between the different areas of the town.
